The Great Auk was the original "penguin." Long before European sailors ever reached the Southern Hemisphere, they knew a big, upright, black-and-white flightless seabird of the cold North Atlantic and called it the penguin. When true penguins were later found below the equator, they simply inherited the name. The Great Auk itself belonged to the auk family, the same group as the puffins, murres, and razorbills, and it was by far the largest of them all, standing roughly 75 to 85 centimeters tall.
On land the bird looked almost comically ungainly, standing bolt upright and waddling in slow, shuffling steps across the bare rock of its colonies. In the water it was transformed. Its tiny, stiff wings worked as flippers, driving it after fish in fast, agile dives. That contrast, helpless above the waterline and superb below it, is exactly what doomed the species. Its few breeding islands were crowded, predictable, and defenseless, and generations of hunters harvested the birds, their eggs, and their fat until almost none were left. The last confirmed pair was killed on the Icelandic islet of Eldey in 1844. Today the Great Auk survives only as skins, skeletons, a scattering of eggs, and the written memories of the people who saw it alive.
Because the Great Auk has been extinct since the 1840s, no one alive has seen one, and everything we know about its appearance comes from museum specimens, bones, eggs, and the descriptions and paintings left by earlier observers. It was unmistakable: a large, penguin-shaped seabird, glossy black above and clean white below, standing upright on stout legs set far back on the body. The single most distinctive mark was a big white oval patch between the bill and each eye, worn in breeding season. Its heavy black bill was deep, hooked, and crossed by a series of vertical grooves, and its wings were startlingly small for such a large bird, no good for flight but perfect for "flying" underwater.

Male vs. female
Male and female Great Auks were, as far as the historical record shows, essentially alike in plumage and hard to tell apart in the field. Both sexes wore the same black-and-white pattern and the same white facial patch in breeding season. Measurements of surviving specimens suggest males may have averaged slightly larger, with somewhat heavier bills, but the overlap was broad and there was no reliable color or pattern difference. Contemporary observers who visited the colonies generally could not sex the birds by sight, and modern researchers rely on skeletal measurements rather than plumage to guess at sex.
Juveniles
Very little was ever recorded about young Great Auks, because the species was already scarce by the time anyone studied seabirds carefully, and the birds bred on remote islands that were difficult and dangerous to reach. From the few accounts and specimens, chicks are thought to have been covered in gray down and to have left the colony for the sea while still small, before they were fully grown, much as young razorbills and murres do today. Immature birds are believed to have had a duller, less sharply defined version of the adult pattern, with the white facial patch reduced or indistinct. Because so few juveniles were ever collected or described, much of their early life remains genuinely uncertain.
No recordings of the Great Auk exist, and written descriptions of its voice are frustratingly thin. Observers at the colonies reported low, hoarse croaking and gurgling notes, along with a deeper, guttural growl when birds were disturbed or handled. One account describes a gurgling sound made when the bird was anxious. Like its living relatives, it was probably close to silent at sea and most vocal on land during the breeding season, when hundreds of birds packed together on the rocks would have produced a low, grumbling chorus rather than anything musical. There are no reliable mnemonics for its calls, simply because too few people described them in enough detail before the species was gone.
The Great Auk once ranged widely across the cold North Atlantic. Breeding colonies were concentrated on a handful of low, rocky islands with easy access to deep water, including sites off Newfoundland (most famously Funk Island), around Iceland (notably Geirfuglasker and, later, Eldey), and on islands off Scotland and other parts of the northeastern Atlantic. Historical bones and accounts show the bird also occurred, at least seasonally, around Greenland, the Faroe Islands, Norway, and the British Isles.
Outside the breeding season the Great Auk dispersed out to sea and ranged much farther south, reaching the waters off the northeastern United States, and in cold years apparently as far as Spain and the western Mediterranean. What it needed on land was very specific: flat or gently sloping rock close to the water, so a heavy, flightless bird could clamber ashore. That requirement limited it to a small number of colonies, and it is exactly what made the species so easy to wipe out, since destroying a few known islands destroyed most of the world population.
The Great Auk was a pursuit diver that fed mainly on fish, chasing them down underwater with powerful strokes of its flipper-like wings. Based on specimen studies and its relatives' habits, it is thought to have specialized in schooling fish of a size it could swallow whole, such as capelin, sand eels, and small shad or herring, along with some crustaceans and other marine animals. Its deep, hooked bill was well suited to gripping slippery, wriggling prey.
Like penguins and other auks, it almost certainly hunted by sight in the upper water column, using its dense, heavy body to stay submerged and its short wings for rapid, agile pursuit. Estimates based on its size suggest it could dive to considerable depths and stay under for a minute or more at a time, foraging well offshore and returning to the colony to feed its single chick.
Great Auks bred in dense, crowded colonies on their few rocky islands, returning to the same traditional sites year after year. Each pair laid a single large egg directly on bare rock, with no real nest built. The egg was big and strongly pear-shaped, pointed at one end, and heavily blotched and scrawled with black, brown, and gray markings on a pale ground. The pointed shape probably helped it pivot in place rather than roll off the rock, and the dense, individual markings may have helped parents recognize their own egg in a packed colony.
Both parents are believed to have shared incubation over roughly six weeks, and both would have fed the chick. This is the heart of the extinction story: a bird that lays just one egg a year, matures slowly, and nests in a few known, accessible places simply cannot replace its numbers fast enough once heavy harvesting begins. Every egg taken and every adult killed at the colony was a loss the population could not absorb.
You cannot see a living Great Auk anywhere on Earth, and no one ever will again. What you can do is see the physical traces it left behind and get close to its nearest living relatives, which give a real sense of how the bird lived.
