Male vs. female

As in the black-necked grebe and other members of its group, the sexes were almost certainly alike, with no reliable plumage difference that an observer could use in the field. Males may have averaged slightly larger, but this is inferred from close relatives rather than firmly documented for the Colombian Grebe itself. Both sexes would have worn the same golden ear fans and chestnut flanks in the breeding season and the same drab gray-and-white pattern in the nonbreeding months. Juveniles

Young Colombian Grebes were never described in any detail, but they would have resembled the striped, downy chicks typical of all grebes.
